Leveraging off-the-shelf AI to facilitate title/abstract screening, full-text review, and data extraction
Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly approaching the point where it can assist in the execution of tasks previously done by humans. Among creators of systematic reviews, there is a growing interest in the ability of AI tools to assist with labor-intensive elements of the process, including title/abstract review, full-text review, and data extraction. There are several candidate off-the-shelf AI tools, but are any of them up to the task? Objectives.
This workshop will assist participants as they engage with AI tools and learn about the state of the science. How well these tools can perform each labor-intensive step of the systematic review process described above will be reviewed, and participants will engage in practice runs using literature of their choice. The primary learning objective is for participants to leave confident in their ability to leverage these tools and to seek out additional resources if desired. Description and Activities/Interaction Plans.
The first segment will be a brief overview of the authors’ findings on these tools’ performance in title/abstract review, full-text review, and data extraction across varying literatures. The second segment will be a hands-on introduction to the logic and tricks behind creating effective prompts and training sets. We will use Chat PDF for this segment. In the third segment, participants will select a literature and practice using the tools themselves.
The focus will be on how to most effectively leverage the tools, and critically assess their current viability as secondary screeners (AI-assisted screening) or secondary data extractors (AI-assisted data extraction). The fourth and final segment will be a open discussion of the participants’ experiences with the tools, their interest in learning more and using these tools, and conclude with a survey on their appraisal of these AI tools for use in the systematic review process.
Could free off-the-shelf AI tools help your organization with systematic reviews? We certainly believe so and are excited to share them with you at GES in Prague.
Join us for our Workshop in Hall C2 on Friday, Sep 13, 2024, from 09:00 to 10:30. It’s a great opportunity to explore these tools and participate in a stimulating conversation. We look forward to seeing you there!
